san gabriel arcangel mission built in 1771 by franciscan friars. formed with stone, brick and mortar it is one of the most preserved missions and the oldest south of monterey. the church is still used today and weddings are still performed here. my cousin was married here.

the side of the front of the church still has the original stairway to the choir loft.

the campanile or bell wall was built after the earthquake of 1812. there are six ancient bells from spain. if you go to california please visit these old missions. they have a mystifying effect on the human soul and brings you back to the old days or as they refer to it as the 'golden day's of california'. it is quiet and peaceful. to sit under the grape vines and olive trees in the afternoon with the shadows reflecting the hot sun on the grounds around you, you can sence the peacefulness and loss of the hectic world you just left. (i hate to use this word) awesome!
