Home Pt. 5: Downtown (Broad Street)

- CE - Sunday, July 9th, 2006 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

Most small towns only have one street that makes up . , for some reason, is an exception. As you go across the tracks that were seen in the last article, Main Street forks. One direction is Main Street which you must go up as it turns into a one way street and Broad Street which travels the opposing direction. Broad street is where downtown Sussex continues.

This is the beginning of Broad Sreeet. The green building contains two staple business in Sussex; Sharp's Drugs which has been around for about 100 years and Starlite Video which has been around since the dawn of the video cassette (it's also the only video plae in Sussex with the "little back room").

As we move a bit further down the street, we see a Bank of Montreal, Pearson's travel and Pearson's Insurance, The famous Moffet's Hardware where absolutely ANYTHING can be purchased (and is then wrapped in paper and tied up with twine), then the Cream Puff Bakery, which of course has good cream Puffs, then a jewelry store and a plumming shop. There is more to this street but unfortunately, for some reason I didn't take any pictures.

A close up of the Cream Puff. If you ever go to Sussex, going to this place is a must!

The old train station. It now serves as an ice cream shop and a tourist information centre.

As you get around the corner of Broad Street which takes you back to Main Street, you can't help but notice Hotel Sussex. This was apparently the best hotel in Sussex inwhich to stay. It is now an apartment building and isn't known as being the best place to in which to live. These sentiments were strengthened when I took the picture and somebody popped his head out the window and yelled "don't take a picture, it's falling down, it won't last!"

This was in the parking lot of the car dealership turned church I mentioned in the third article. I don't even know where to begin with this.

awesome! my hometown had a and a that ran parallel- in opposing directions- through downtown. sussex looks like a neat place. and, you gotta love places like moffet's. theyre all but disappearing nowadays...

Chris Erb: 10th Jul 2006 - 16:44 GMT

Sussex is a neat place but I would never want to live there again. It's fun to go back but not for very long. It's much more interesting to be in the town looking at it from a new set of eyes now.

I imagine Moffet's and many of the other stores downtown won't last much longer after the Wal Mart opens next year. It's very sad.

Peter: 10th Jul 2006 - 18:05 GMT

i share similar feelings about my hometown. even our small family-owned hardware store closed a while back when hope depot opened up across town...

colavitos ghost: 10th Jul 2006 - 21:41 GMT

whoa, peter! weird freudian slip, there...."hope depot"? anything but!

(hahahaha! I almost typed "anything buy")

EvilGentleman: 10th Jul 2006 - 21:53 GMT

Speaking of Freudian slips, I wonder why it's called "Broad Street" in the first place?

And "Hope Depot" is obviously the car dealership-turned-church in the last picture. Let's hear it for copyright infringement in the name of evangelism! Not!

Chris Erb: 10th Jul 2006 - 22:46 GMT

It's called Broad Street beause the street is quite... broad. It's actually a boulevard which is why it is generally referred to as "The Boulevard" by most locals. It is also sometimes called "Broadway" for some reason. There's even a cafe in the section that I didn't get pictures of (there are some in the next set) called Broadway Cafe where you can get quite a tasty meal.

EvilGentleman: 10th Jul 2006 - 23:52 GMT

Aw, darn. I was hoping the next post was gonna be "Broads of Broad Street"
