Seriosly. When did nationalism come to be the same as internationalism?

jeeff: translation?

Peter: 19th Jun 2006 - 14:44 GMT

jamie? elaine? make sense of this for us canadians and americans...

jamie: 19th Jun 2006 - 14:57 GMT

it seems to be a rant about the proliferation of flags here lately. Specifically the flag of st. george. the 'english' flag, as pictured. It's all to do with the world cup but as i'm neither a sports fan nor particularly patriotic, i can, i'm a afraid, shed no light on the rest of it.

::shrugs::
i am supposed to care about football?
numpty means fool, that's all i know.

Lawrence: hehe ;)

Well, being a Brit living in TO, I concur with James and would add that, in the UK, you need a permit to put up a flag pole and you need a licence to fly a flag - which is why you don't see too many compared with over the Pond. So I'm guessing flag fever in England was quite a big deal. Not sure but I think McClaren is the new footie manager for England now that the dour Swede has retired. It's 2 years until the Euro soccer finals and the first game in 18 months is France v Italy, oooooh.

Chris Erb: 13th Jul 2006 - 17:55 GMT

Why do you need a permit and license just to fly a flag?

Andrew: 13th Jul 2006 - 19:43 GMT

I think it goes back to the times when the 'country' had various power blocks (robber barons) and local flags were seen to encourage that, so all flag-flying was banned unless offically sanctioned by a licence. So generally you'll only see British flags on government buildings. But there may be a better explanation.

jamie: 13th Jul 2006 - 21:31 GMT

there's that, and the fact that flying the british/english national flags is generally discouraged due to it synonomity(?) with white supremacy/racist bigotry thanks to the likes of fascist organisations like the .

Isn't that kind of nuts that a nation's flag is associated with a select segment of the population of that nation? Isn't the whole point of having a national flag is for it to represent that nation as a whole? I don't get it.

Grange: 28th Jul 2006 - 13:16 GMT

I guess its kind of like the difference between canadians and the US peter . Your national flag represents your identity, you have a lot of rules as to when its flown and how its shown, as well as its flown all over citys and towns and homes .
Not so much in canada, as we identify our country as queen and country.( some folks dont like the queen , however it.s part of our national fabric ) Of course dont fly our flag upside down at the world series as we get a tad pissed about it .
That being said , the national conscious is growing as to the red and white , so dont be suprised when you start seeing more and of course more rules as to how to fly them .
Except in Quebec ,I think theirs is the poutine on frys with a big middle finger facing west .....
