Farewell Basswood Tree

Ever wonder how, in 3 hours, you can go from this

to this?

Well you'll need a crane,

A guy who's willing to ride on the cranes hook and wield a large chainsaw 50 feet in the air.

and a really big chipper.

Now we really hated to have to do anything with this tree. As you can see from the before shots it was about a 70 year old tree that had a very large canopy. We really liked our big tree. But it had a flaw that made it's existance above my neighbors childs bedroom mean we had to do something.

It was HOLLOW!!

You can't have a tree like that hanging over your neighbors house here in the land of Tornados. So $3000 later . .
And our neighbor whos house this tree hung over was very nice and let the crane haul the tree OVER his house to the street to meet its final end. Probably saved us $1000 to able to let them crane it out. Of course the cats like the new hole in the sky above the backyard now.

I just had a basswood tree cut down today and have a new sunny morning spot in the family room. I will miss the tree, but it also was hollow half way up and dead on the top. I will plant another tree in its memory.

The pictures and comments will be just great for my students. We were observing and writing about a basswood tree near our classroom. Over Christmas vacation the tree was cut down. We were very sad about the situation. Not every teacher has the experience of having her writing prompt cut down. The tree was old and a few branches had fallen on a car. Thanks for sharing your experience with the basswood tree.

I'm in third grade. When I came back from winter break I was suprised because the tree our class was writing about was cut down. I felt really sad. So I want to plant another tree. I still have to ask my teacher. I feel sorry for you guys. I know what it feels like.

scott: that must be awsome to have that job
