Potholes

Just a small sample of the glorious craters dotting the roads of the Montreal area. Considering the climate we have here, you would think they would know how to build decent roads, like South Dakota (which gets colder temperatures in winter than we do, as well as more thawing action), but nooooooo, that seems to be too much to ask. Good old government logic. Quebec has the highest taxes in North America, and it seems we pay more to get less.

Our first contestant was located at the north end of Fenelon Boulevard in Dorval, where it meets the ramps for Autoroute 20. I went back with the measuring tape, but it had been filled in. Good thing, too. It was at least 10 inches deep, and as you can see from my size 12 feet, it was pretty damn big.

Contestant #2 comes from Dalton Street between Cavendish Boulevard and the Cote-de-Liesse Expressway. The road is the border between the Saint-Laurent Bourough of the City of Montreal and the Town of Mount Royal, so I am not fully sure who is responsible for this monstrosity. As you can (sort of) see from these two pictures, it is 32 inches long and 16 inches wide, and is about 6 inches deep

Contestant #3 hails from the same block as contestant #2, and is about the same depth, but is 36 inches long, and I was unable to measure the width due to traffic becoming heavier, but I would guesstimate about 16 inches wide as well.

I'm suprised you weren't intentionally run down by a montreal cabbie or other local. Is it just me? Or do they always seemed to speed up when I cross the road... not necessiarily at an intersection.

London (UK) got some real fab ones too. Some split whole roads, crossways; the creation of cable TV companies. Hey it makes cycling, that bit more challenging.

holes, i've seen holes, its your foot size! you would only be a size 10 1/2 it's your long toes evil. those are long toes with nice nike sandals. my toes are kinda squatty and short. almost like a duck. i'm embarressed when people look at my toes and believe me they are always looking at my toes. i think i'll let the toe nails grow very long this way i can say i wear a size 11 or 12. and when i sit on my perch i can use the toe nails to help me hook the wood.

uh oh, Jack is thinking about nesting.

EvilG, your potholes made me think of the Monty Python sketch about how bad things were. I had remembered that there was a bit about the hardship of living in a hole in the middle of the road. I was slightly off:

i hate the roads here this is a first class city but we have third world roads the city should stop collecting so much taxes and start getting to work the city should be ashamed of themselves with their high debt , bad roads , bad metro service etc

Mitch: 27th May 2008 - 07:18 GMT

The reason we have giant pot holes and roads in such terrible shape has to do with the Quebec government's cutting corners. They use lower quality asphalt and put down only a very thin layer of it, unlike elsewhere in Canada and the rest of the world. The roads in Montreal honestly fair WORSE than third world countries. It's difficult enough driving on them, try biking.

No surprise, this is also one of the only places in the world where ambulances don't have paramedics, where laws against animal cruelty are non-existent and where hate and discrimination are not only welcome, but the government has an official organization to enforce it (aka Language Police). Heh, Montreal a first class city? The roads here are only the tip of the iceberg...

Dekalb Farmers Market

This place is always one of my first stops whenever I'm in , though I guess it's technically in . The random/specialty stuff you can find there is so irresistible that I actually packed a box-full of stuff I purchased...
