Kicked Off Bus
[previous] :: [next]
this is sheepshead bay. as a kid my friends would jump off the piers to retreive the coins people threw into the water. i of course did not swim so i held the money and clowned around with the people.
the bay and walkway across the bay. to the left is manhattan beach and straight away is coney island.
the piers and the view
on sunday's you cant find room to walk around this area. parking is impossible.
i got this of lundy's an expensive clam bar. years ago they were oriented to the working man's wallet and you could go in there with your family and eat and eat, not anymore, a dozen clams cost $12.
so i got the rear of my car in that pic and what does all this have to do with getting kicked off a bus, well its like this, my friend bernie and i decided to go fishing off a pier back in 1954. we had all our gear and we were fishing but at the end of the day we got skunked (no fish) and after playing around the piers we decided to call it quits and all of a sudden we saw it, a box floating under a pier and there were fish in it. so we decided to fetch the catch and i climbed down the pier and hung upside down with my arms dangling in the water. bernie held on to me and i got the box. we brought it up to the top and picked out the good ones. well we decided to get a hot dog and some clams and then we went for the bus. we waited for a half hour in the boiling hot sun and finally the bus came. we got on the bus and as we walked to the rear we noticed everyones heads jerking back and sideways. the bus started and went for 50 or so feet and came to a halt. he jumped up and threw us off the bus for stinking up the place. so we ended up walking home. we did not think about this smelly fish because thats the way fish is supposed to smell, right, no wrong.. we gave some fish to bernies parents who did'nt know a snapper from a gold fish and they in turn decided to give it to his grandfather who unfortunately was estranged from his grandmother. they felt perhaps he will take back his grandmother and they can patch things up but instead when he saw the rotting fish he screemed that they were trying to kill him and a whole new problem started up. i in turn had brought the fish to my grandfather, a wise old man, and he promptly placed it in the garbage can. he said a fish is not supposed to smell fishy. bernie and i still talk about that day.
