South Town
[previous] :: [next]South Town is the area of the city around 11th & South Grand. It used to be a bustling little area a long time ago from what I've heard and read but is a pretty depressed area now, and has been for a while. I lived about 8 blocks from here until I was 6 years old (I'm only 19 now). In my early teens me and friends spent a lot of time at Skank Skates skateboarding. Across the street was the Bourbon Street bar, on the opposite corner was a motorcycle club/gang which has since moved and a few places to eat on both sides of the street. Occasionally we would get hasseled for money by addicts and homeless people when we would hang out front of the skatepark but never really got messed with much. I haven't stopped in the area for several years so I made a quick stop on my bike ride today.
This mural was put up by Big Brother Big Sister, I always liked the saying that's painted up there.

Found this old picture on the computer. Taken inside Skank Skates in October 2001, the right edge of the South Town theater is visible next to Madison Cleaners. That's yours truly pulling a smooth 50-50 grind. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
