Alexander Wood saved this part of the city from burning during the war of 1812.

Biff: But he couldn't save it from developers...

jack: hahaha

Rapunzel: 25th Mar 2006 - 17:23 GMT

Sorry, am Canadian, but don't know the history here... although DO know a bit about the 1812 war. Didn't we burn the white house or something???

Biff: 25th Mar 2006 - 17:58 GMT

The American commander Zebulon Pike ordered the town to be burnt for the unexpected resistance they had encountered. Alexander Wood and his band of teenage insurgents halted the Yankee advance at what is now
Alexander Street where the statue is. Pike was fatally shot in the back while retreating down Yonge Street, although the Americans say he was hit by shrapnel from munitions stored in a burning Church. Later the British burnt Washinton in reprisal. But now we are all good friends...

jeeff: 25th Mar 2006 - 18:17 GMT

hey biff, great post. where is the statue? looks like it's just off church & ...?

Biff: 25th Mar 2006 - 18:26 GMT

It's at Church and Alexander Street, in front of the American Apparel store
which I find ironic. I guess they won after all...

jack: did you ever see canadian bacon?

Biff: No, but I saw Kevin Bacon.
