Things I Love About Public Transit

With respect to EvilGentleman and his list of bad things about public transit (many of which I do agree with), I feel the need to stick up for this mode of transportation.
1. Relatively environmentally friendly.
2. Cheaper than driving, by a million bucks or thereabouts.
3. Easier and less stressful than driving because you can read or knit or think and don't need to watch for cars, pedestrians, cyclists. Just don't get so lost in thought that you miss your stop...
4. You can take your bike on, eg. if you get a flat or are drunk or just pooped out.
5. Despite all the freaks on the bus/train you can meet a lot of cool people.
6. Bus maps.
7. Transfers, especially in strange cities where different stuff is printed on them.
8. The glowing promise of train route extensions and new bus routes for better service.
9. Riding for free during holidays and special events.
10. People-watching, whether wondering what book someone is reading or being amused by drunken attempts at conversation with the bus driver or watching parents and their babies or trying to figure out what is wrong with that guy's leg.
That's all I can think of right now. But I want to say that those of you who live in cities with decent public transit should be thankful that you have that option. When I am in Edmonton I bitch about how the bus is always late, it never runs to this place, it never meets up with the LRT in time, etc. But when I am living somewhere with poor or no service, man do I ever miss good ol' ETS!

LOL, I just knew someone would do this post sooner or later. Might I add:
12 - By using a daily or monthly pass, you have one of the best ways to explore a new city there could ever be.
13 - No worries about finding a parking spot
14 - Built-in monkey bars!
15 - hot babes in miniskirts... ooops, never mind...
15 (for real this time) - Subways are a great way to escape the summer heat, if the A/C is working.
btw, I should mention that I never said I did not like public transit, there a just a lot of things associated with it that I hate. And I am really good at complaining, and it appears so is everyone else. ;-)

I thought of another one while riding along (on bike not bus) the other day: sitting in an articulated bus, in the articulated part, and staring at the floor as the bus turns a corner. Then determining whether or not the sight of the floor turning without you makes you feel queasy.

I live in a rural area of tasmania (southern most island of australia, we are a state of oz for those who don't know) and we don't have public transport in my area except for the school busses which are about to fall apart and are seen broken down on the side of the road at least once a week, and there's no such thing as passenger trains, so i think i'm sticking with my hilux ute

Near as I can determine from Google, a Hilux Ute is a slang term for the Toyota 4x4 pickup truck sold in Australia and NZ known as the the Toyota HiLux. I believe "Ute" is an abbreviated slang for "utility vehicle". HiLux trucks used to be sold in North America until 1976, when the line was renamed "Truck", and the line was again renamed in 1995 to Toyota Tacoma. More info at Hilux
Ute is also the name of the Native American Nation from which the name of the state of Utah is derived. Their primary reservation is located in the Utah and Colorado portions of the Four Corners area.
