Memorial to Berlin Wall Deaths

Memorial to the dead who in their last breath tried to cross the (just the ones in Berlin, not from the border between East and West Germany), near Haus am , a very amazing museum.

Each cross has the picture and name of person who died from that monstrosity. For the most part, in you won't see any trace of it. Remnants can be found all over the city, though.

Because some of the bodies were not returned to families and/or were not given proper burials, some family members treat these as gravesites, and bring flowers.

I won't lie. I cried very hard seeing this, and I'm just a yank born at the end of the Cold War.

NO MORE WARS: HOT OR COLD.

with love,
your friendly neighborhood nomad

it is a very disturbing site. all the people are young. and young people are the ones who die in a war. i was south of berlin and our job was to get to berlin within 45 minutes by helicopter and jump right into a war. the soldiers in berlin had a 45 minute life span. once or twice a month we had alerts in the middle of the night and had to get into gear and move out into the black forest and wait for an all clear. or else it was bad news. war. a soldier does not want war he wants peace. but he will do whatever he has to do at any given moment. sorry about that i mean men and women soldiers. at fort dix in new jersey we used to stroll over to the wac's barracks to hopefully catch a glimpse of girls, but we were failures. they had drapes on their windows, phooey.

yep..yet another sad war sight...i think they should fukin ro sham bo (or hoever u spell it) and see who wins or some shit because this is rediculous...waste of tears and lifes

chiamattt: Carltan13. are you 13?

Jamie: Carltan, what on earth are you talking about?

Tamara: 11th Apr 2006 - 04:39 GMT

I don't want to assume, but I think what Carltan is saying, is that life is too important to waste and unfortunately war has a way of taking good people away and causing havoc in its path. Something we all know.

Looking at the photograph, I have an over whemling sense of sadness. But I think it's important to see images like this, so we can understand the freedoms and liberties that were fought for. I have had family fight in all both world wars and flee through partition. I do apreciate that life that I have, and I am grateful for those who fight everyday to overcome injustice and try to create peace.

I do agree with the responder ( I assume it's a female, but I cannot be to certain). Wars are hard fought to achieve peace between conflicting countries, however, sometimes peace can be realized by diplomacy. And yes, the picture invokes a profound sorrow in me, and it constantly reminds me how much better the present is compared to the old days.

today is better??? Have you got your head in the sand, don't you know that America is sending the best of it's youth to war in other countries and they are being sent back in pieces in wooden boxes, so the fatcat businessmen can make a few extra billion dollars on their financial reports? Wake up and smell the blood!!

I agree with ette. Looking at corporate war profits in USA and Europe today shows how immoral war is. We blindly send our youth to wherever the powers that be decide, then start shipping them back in body bags - just because some politician says XXX country is dangerous?? How many high ranking corporate fat cats and politicians son's or daughters do you think are on the front line with a gun in their hands at this hour?

this is a good idea because all they did is want to be free but then they were killed for that. they deserve this

Fire on Ste Catherine

While walking to school last February I noticed there were a lot of emergency vehicles, fire trucks in particular, hurrying down the main arteries of downtown. I was already late for school so I was unable to find out...
