It Must Be Warm in There

I am tired! I am hungry! All I want is hot shower, a hot soup and a warm bed and I am happy!

I came to the city for a better life. Milking the cows is not exactly what I wanted to do all my life. Ah…milk! That would be so delicious right now. Why did I ever come here? Hindsight is always a wonderful thing.

But isn’t it always greener at the other side of the fence? I had to discover it for myself.

From where I see it, it now parched. So, why am I hanging around here?

The city. It is so intoxicating! The sights, the sound, the smell! The smell…Yuk! I smell. I have to go the shelter and wash up! People give more to a clean looking and pleasant smelling man rather than to a dirty bum.

That nice lady yesterday, she gave me five dollars! Bless her soul. While some people look at me with disdain, she did not. There was no pity in her eyes either! But what was the look she gave me? I think too much! Well, I have nothing else to do but think!

People should not look at me with disgust. They do not know where I have been. If they took the time to discover, they maybe surprised. Perhaps, they will look at me with fear, or even gratefulness. I may represent their future, if they don’t smarten up!

Yes, I, in another lifetime, was like you! Suit and tie, I was on my way to the corner office. I was the wunderkind! I was living the good life and was on the fast lane. I believed in “No risk, no glory!” I took risks! I was rewarded generously. But the higher you get, the harder you fall. And I fell! Hard! There’s no need to get into the details. I don’t like to dwell on it. Suffice to say, my life is much simpler now. And in so many ways, much better!

So, next time you see me, or the likes of me, don’t look at me with so much revulsion in your eyes. Just like you, I have my own life story. Perhaps, even more interesting than yours!

It’s getting late! My cart is getting heavy! I have to go find a warm place to sleep. Thanks for listening to me! God bless!

How's that, Jack?

very, very good. i worked in a printing shop in the early 60's and there was a really smart guy and natty dresser. he was an avid reader and liked tom wolf's, 'look homeward angel'. he also liked booze and was always drinking. his wife became a drunk and the two soon parted. he lost his job to booze and one day came into the shop wearing torn and dirty clothes. he was looking for a handout from his old friends. i'll never know what happened to him but i'd like to think he recovered from the bottle and went on with life. yes, some, maybe, lots of homeless people had a good life but lost it due to some unfortunate circumstance. their lives would make great writings. i'm almost tempted to take to the streets and uncover some drama out there. elicar you stepped into your subject and imagined him. that is a gift.

Why thank you Jack! I have always enjoyed your little stories. I am eagerly awaiting to see the world thru your eyes via your pictures.
