there is an argument that 'elepahant and castle' is a corruption of 'el infanta de castille' and that this was where a mistress of charles 1st lived. it's a contraversial theory, though. www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-ele1.htm

as well as general etymology i am interested in place names, and london is so old and the place names can be so historically knotted that it is not always possible to undo to a point of resolution, but the poetic is fascinating and the stories are all part of the legend.

re place names: i love the city for this very reason (city on saturdays & sundays when the aliens have gone back to their semidetached homes wherever), the city & east end are just beautiful & quite magickal i think
