Astoria's Hidden Jewel

- Musicman - Friday, January 27th, 2006 : goo

There seems to be a glut of upscale, boring hang outs all of this great city.
Used to be you could walk into a obscure little place in the east village, or Williamsburg , or Nolita ..
But Queens ???

Now, at the corner of 24th St. & Ditmars is this little
( tiny ) wine /coffee joint.
There seems to be a variety of stuff happening there, but what really nice, is you can hang.
The music is a sick mixture of classical, jazz, pop, rock,
all kinds of stuff.

The little open mic night is really warm , freindly and hip

they have a Steinway Baby Grand,
This is what should be happening.
This city needs more of this

The name they gave it is Waltz or Waltz-Astoria
look in up , google it,
it don't matter...grab a freind or two.
drive or subway over there and hang out .
Drop all the super cool garbage at the door.
This place is just warm
pure Butter...

jack: do they invite jazz groups to perform?

Musicman: 6th Feb 2006 - 15:50 GMT

I'm not sure of the booking policy
But I was there for an open mic, a Wednesday or two ago.
Try contacting them

Nice little venue with a really warm crowd

Ugh! So glad this annoying yenta stopped with the postings! Maybe now she can get back to cooking my kreplech and doing that stupid ceramics!

Even better than the place mentioned above is a place close to the subway called "FreezePeach Cafe". It's right on the corner of 29th Street and Ditmars Blvd, but hidden away a little because it's not right on Ditmars. (The entrance is actually just off 29th). Great Free Trade Coffee, Espresso, and about 30 organic loose teas brewed fresh.
