[previous] :: [next]
i drew this for an illustrated story that hool and i are working on. it's an ecumenopolis, a term coined by a greek geographer called doxiadis to describe a continuous global city, the result of urbanization run wild. This article has been viewed 3838 times in the last 3 years
Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 25th Jan 2006 - 14:34 GMTWait a minute...where's America? There's a whole other side to the globe? Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 25th Jan 2006 - 14:51 GMTMy favorite near-Ecumenopolis is Mega-City One from Judge Dredd (2000AD). It would be a pure Ecumenopolis if it wasn't for the abandoned radioactive center (Cursed Earth) which would then allow Mega-City Two and Texas City to merge. In Judge Dredd's future Europe and the rest of the world is also mega-cities with radlands separating them. Peter: 25th Jan 2006 - 15:44 GMTwoah, that mega-city one link was pretty fascinating... also: thats cool, jeeff! jeeff: 25th Jan 2006 - 17:37 GMTthanks lurker & peter! i wanted to focus on somewhere besides america because i thought it would be more interesting if the story wasn't america-centric. i like the variety of land masses in the mediterranean area, and africa is forecast to be the most quickly urbanizing part of the world in the near future, so it fits. also, i used google earth to get an accurate picture of the continents wrapped around the globe. no tracing tho. hooray for technology Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 25th Jan 2006 - 18:01 GMT(You know I was joking about the America thing, right?) jeeff: 25th Jan 2006 - 18:09 GMTi've heard snowcrash is really good. i haven't read sci-fi in a long time. i know you were joking but it was a conscious decision on my part so i thought i'd explain. Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 25th Jan 2006 - 18:39 GMTGroovy. Snowcrash is so close it's barely sci-fi. elaine: 25th Jan 2006 - 20:45 GMTtenyen made me read snowcrash. my next homework is the diamond age, i started it but was waylaid by a buddhist thing. Peter: 25th Jan 2006 - 20:53 GMTall this talk of snowcrash has me feeling like i should read it now... hmm. citynoise book club :)
groovehouse: 26th Jan 2006 - 16:49 GMT"all this talk of snowcrash has me feeling like i should read it now... hmm. citynoise book club :)" I went looking for this book yesterday at a discount book store, no luck, so I may pick it up at a regular bookstore this weekend! Book club geeks unite! Ali: 19th Oct 2006 - 02:20 GMTi'm torn between Earth as a garden planet or Earth as a planetary megalopolis (ecumenopolis)...one satisfies my conscience while the other my dreams...
