initially my brain said "where, where?" then it said "oh, the tree"

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 10th Jan 2006 - 15:03 GMT

Astoria is full of christmas tumbleweeds. People have put them out in the street but the garbage men won't pick them up. Our tree is ornament-less, but still taking up a large portion onf my living room. I may have to mount a covert operation to dispose of it.

in front of the very large apartment building near the subway stop i get off at coming home, i saw a pile of christmas trees- probably 3-4 trees high and about 15 trees long- spanning down half the block. it was too dark to snap a photo, though... maybe ill pass it today when the sun is still up...

we kids use to collect the trees and bring them to a lot along kings highway in brooklyn and burn them at night. we would stand there in the cold and watch the flames go high up. when you burn a tree it goes up real fast and flames out so you have a charcoal stump at the end. then you grind them down for mulch. makes good mulch for tomato plants. perhaps i'll post my poem on tomatoes which won an award.

Peter: 10th Jan 2006 - 16:05 GMT

lets hear that poem, jack!

i hear that in , every year, they drag the dead christmas trees out onto and have huge bonfires with them there...

elaine: 10th Jan 2006 - 17:21 GMT

i saw some today, but they looked suspicious to me, like they had been artfully dumped by a trader... i saw lots today but i didn't have my camera, ooh la la!

lisa: the homeless people could have used this tree

Peter: for what? next christmas?

jeeff: yeah, just freeze it.

There is an in . I went there for the first time recently, to pick up a new power-supply for my powerbook. When I entered the store, I discovered a most modern interior nestled inside a quaint last-century...
