And in the Evening...

Its been one of those slow summer-time nights here; ones dark and heavy, where the sun seems to set really late and the nights are as humid as the days. It's a scorcher out there, as they say.

I just came in from an evening walk with my flatmate; I was sitting there reading some music magazine, he eating supper, when he decides he needs a smoke. So I join him while he hides his guilty pleasure from his fiance, a late night smoke when she agreed to marry him only after he gave up the Camels for her.

We proceed around the block. Half a block west on w. 108th street, one block south on Broadway, one block east on w. 107th street, one block north on Amsterdam avenue where we make a left turn back onto our street and snuff out butts on the three sandy steps of the stoop.

I don't think I said anything the whole time; I did do some nodding through. I seemed to be pretty curious about the squeaky sounds my feet were making inside the grimy Chucks. I do remember him only talking about Mayor Bloomburg's decision today to end the recycling services for plastic and glass for budget reasons; terrorism costs alot of money too, I suppose:

he: "Damn fuckin' conservative liberal!"
he: "Promises not to raise taxes... and then this"
me: [nod]
he: "What, they could just tack a fuckin' extra dollar onto what we cough up to the Feds, you know?"
me: [double nod, trying only to match the pace of my step]
he: "fuck that, I'm going to set all my glass out for that homeless bro. At least he can make a buck or two. Thats more than I can say about myself in this fiscal..."
me: [nod]
cigarette butt: *snuff*

And I try to slide down the steep rail of my spiral staircase on the way in, but kind of loose my balance and shimmy right of the thing into my bedroom. And I hear him blame the smoky-smell on me, although she knows better, and she's sitting reading a bride magazine, and I shut my door on them as they kiss, and I sit down in front of the fan.

That's tonight.
