Attack of the Giant Phones

- Catherine Penfold-Waxman - Wednesday, November 16th, 2005 : goo

I was just out getting lunch. Hearing a ruckus behind me on 42nd street, I turned around to see a mob of angry people. A giant red phone was bearing down on me. A moment of panic. Why is it always New York that gets trashed in every apocalyptic/alien/monster movie? Anyhoo, turns out it was a protest march. I read the pamphlet they handed me. MCI (a telecom giant) apparently owns the phone lines at the NY prisons and gouges the inmates for every collect call (the only kind they can make). It cost 630% more for their collect calls than a regular customer.

The phone was really creepy. I may have nightmares.

the phone receiver looks like some kind prophylactical device from another galaxy...or at least another solar system--I may have nightmares, too! ;)

wow, that giant phone is cool. price-gouging, however, isn't. i used to use as my mobile carrier, then switched when i started learning about the seemingly endless offenses they've committed in the name of the almighty dollar...

MCI-WorldCom, anyone?! hahahaha! what a fiasco.

ps. i like that guy (reporter?) out front in the first photo. it looks like they're protesting him.

I was in NYC last weekend for the RageAgainstTheMachine concert on Randalls island. Here is a typical tourist picture of Times Square. Since one of the guys we were with never saw NYC and since we really didnt have much...
