Herd Instinct: Luton - Belfast

International

first comes the pong, then the stacatto of a million aluminium seatbelt buckles. people rush, people push to go nowhere fast. people hustle, people bustle to stand cramped together, agitated in the narrow aisle of this ageing boeing 737. please make sure your arm rests are down and that your seat is in the upright position.

the doors open and we have a stampede. the herd disperses. this aluminium tube. this can of stale, recycled air empties in a matter of seconds. please note that your nearest exit may be behind you.

people rush people push, to stand still, propped up against ageing baggage trolleys with squeaky wheels. people hustle, people bustle to watch the baggage conveyor not move. not an inch. not a centimetre. not until the klaxon.

image 1024834054airport

the constant flamingo call of rubber on steel as the conveyor begins it's next journey to nowhere. bags, suitcases, luggage appears, some bags have coloured tape or rainbow straps tied carefully round them for ease of indentification. to shorten that split "is it mine?" second. anything to save a few airport minutes. an minute can be an eternity.

wonder what security is like at belfast international airport?

hasslehoff: 29th Apr 2005 - 14:34 GMT

when i used to go there you got x-rayed and frisked just going into the terminal building.

elaine: 29th Apr 2005 - 14:35 GMT

don't know, but i do know that we are just now allowed nailfiles again at heathrow after the 9/11 tightening on security meant that they evidently thought passengers were going to be manicuring folk to death

Peter: 29th Apr 2005 - 14:53 GMT

totally. last time i flew, they confiscated my- get this- nosehair trimmers... which have blades that are like 2mm long. hahahahahaha. but then again, that was at a nyc airport. naturally, theyre freaky about security nowadays... but not enough to actually do much more than annnoy the law abiding citizens whilst letting the criminals still slip through. so many stories in the news about people sneaking guns/explosives through, and here i get busted for a freaking benign nosehair trimmer!
