The Last Gasp of Summer

M was visiting from overseas, here on business for a couple weeks. she had been bouncing from toronto to new york and all points in-between, but still found a day to hang out with me. we went friday to the toronto islands and walked along the boardwalk, pointed across to the cormorant colony on the leslie spit, ate dinner at the boardwalk cafe and talked to the friendly glaswegian waiter. split a bottle and a half of wine, walked down to the beach and skipped stones. we missed the 6:00 ferry by a minute or two and so sat watching the shadows lengthen till 6:30. now it appears that was the last gasp of summer this year.

beautiful! we had a lovely indian summer too, but now its all dissolved into cold, ceaseless autumn rains. i hope the tomatoes were growing on our fire escape have a chance to ripen before the frost comes, which will surely be sooner than later. ahh, winter.

kobe: pretty, this

elaine: bye, summer xxx

summer, you old indian summer, your the tear that comes after june times laughter, you see so many dreams that dont come true, dreams we planted when summer time was new. you are here to watch over a heart that's been broken, by some words that somebody, said, were spoken.

But what about the origin of the term "Indian summer" itself?

Although many parts of the United States have spells of such weather, the most common and exemplary episodes of Indian summer occur in the region where the term first appeared, in records written during the Revolutionary War: the Mid-Atlantic states and the Ohio Valley. Indian summer in this region is generally caused by high-pressure systems that frequently stall near West Virginia at this time of year.
