1986 Was the Year I Left Los Angeles

1986 was the year I left Los Angeles. I walked familiar and unfamiliar streets for two months taking pictures with a cheap camera. One afternoon I walked south from the old plaza and saw the arches of the Pico House, the first large hotel built in Los Angeles, in 1851, when it was still a small town of about 5000 people. The rhythm of these simple stone arches pleased me. The fact that the building was one of the oldest in the west pleased me. The empty sidewalk pleased me.

Just as I snapped the shutter, a pedestrian walked into the frame. I thought about cropping the picture before uploading it, but decided not to. It was serendipitous. That half of a person in the distance says something about my native city.
