New Junction Stencils

- elaine - Thursday, July 28th, 2005 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

spotted on prichards road, as a postscript to this discussion about the disgorged state of local junction boxes, what caught my eye was the form rather than the content, that it was a stencil, quite good, like the stary eyes (and, as well, as a bonus, the reverse stencil thing on the side)

image 3876

on closer inspection, what was this, a lobster/crab type boy? no, it's very clearly some kind of stripping tool, so, yes, the physical hacking in to these boxes is evidently about more than finding a convenient street cupboard to put your empty special brew cans...

fascinating... id love to know more about whats up with those boxes, why theyre always busted open, and what people are doing with/to the innards!

nice graf, though. the white eyes are a nice touch.

elaine: 28th Jul 2005 - 14:29 GMT

very nice graf, even down to the detail in the wrench/stripper thing, you just know from looking at it it's one of those ratcheted tools, fantastic detail.
i know someone who works in telecoms and he was remarkably off hand about it all, and i doubt seriously i will ever really know. but they do make good street cupboards evidently, and useful billboards

fuzzytank: 28th Jul 2005 - 15:42 GMT

what are you talking about?
wrench?

i see a guy flicking me off, and the perspective is a little wierd on the arm but...

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 15:54 GMT

yeah it does look like he is shooting the bird, but they shoot the bird differently in the uk so maybe a tool?

elaine: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:01 GMT

ok, but look

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:04 GMT

show a photo of how they shoot the bird in the uk

elaine: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:08 GMT

same, but i just offer this as a comparison so you can see what i mean too, but it is ambiguous surely? i look at it and i really don't know for sure now, it was the context that made me see that and the scratches and the propensity for bleeds don't help

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:14 GMT

to me it looks more as a penis than a finger or a pliers!

elaine: o freud, where art thou?

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:22 GMT

what I really want to see is a closer photograph of the stick-man on the white paint on the right side ;-)

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:31 GMT

his arm is on fire? maybe from stripping a hot wire from out of the junctionbox!

elaine: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:37 GMT

see, i just don't know. but what i do know is i quite like the way it's a stencil in negative

piranha erem: 28th Jul 2005 - 16:37 GMT

oh yes! i see that. i thought it was black-on-white-on-green but now i see it is just white spray on the green with the stick-man as the stencil.

elaine: so good use of spray mount is my guess

roland: 29th Jul 2005 - 10:12 GMT

yer stick man is normally seen lounging on the backs of boxes of matches, good to see he's getting out and about

hoody feller certainly not working for the telecoms company - if so he'd have a "kroning" punchdown tool, which looks more like a tiny monkey's paw. the shifting wrench (no way is it a bad-finger) in his hand might be for opening the junction box or maybe even helping the locals with any broken machines they might have (he could be like a modern day Emily [from Bagpuss] who repairs broken stuff then stashes it in the junction box for the original owners to pick up)

Jai-o: 17th Nov 2005 - 21:50 GMT

That's a pcp or primary connection/cross connection point, breaking into them and stripping the wires is generally associated with 'phreaking' which involves attaching another series of wires and hardware called a 'box' (usually with a colour prefix, depending on the use of the box) then exploiting the phone systems.
The is a rather fetching type of 'war chalking'.

Hope that helps, by the way, love all these photos I might be a regular, I'm off to london soon to shoot some 8mil and a few stills, so thanks for the inspiration.

ha!

plus and by the way, i only just noticed that there are a pair of runes graffed onto these doors, a big Y with a middle forky bit. this is algiz, a rune of protection. presumably to ward off interruption from the phreakers, jai?
