Reykjavik, Iceland - Bleeagh - Saturday, June 25th, 2005 : goo

I have a thing for color, and following a long walk around the old city one evening, I turned back to view the harbor. This is what greeted me. The neon sign seemed to be straining to match the graceful fury of a far northern sunset. Absolutely beautiful.

What was the temperature; what time was it; what direction (NSEW) was your
camera pointing ?

Thanks, Lili. This photo was taken at roughly 11pm, and I was facing roughly WSW. The temperature was probably something like 45 degrees F. Many of the sunsets during the eight nights I stayed in Reykjavik looked like this, with intense colors dancing in the sky for over an hour.

I just consulted Google Earth to confirm what I had suspected: Reyjavik is at 64 degrees 8 minutes north, the exact same latitude as Coral Harbour, Nunavut, where I lived for six years. I can definitely confirm that sunsets at that latitude are long. In fact, during the last week of June, the sunset and the sunrise are one and the same, with the sun setting for about 90 minutes before rising again (in flatter terain, anyways). The colours are incredible, and you can still see the reflection of the sun off the mid-level clouds directly to the north, even at midnight. Reykjavik is beautiful, I must add, and I hope to visit it someday. It must have been a wonderful trip, Bleeagh.
