A Walk & A Visit

after finishing a grueling writing project this afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a walk up the road to visit my friend. It was quite an afternoon--blustery, with what the cloud identification folks call "mixed skies." On the right side of the road is newly planted feed corn.

Along the way, I found this. Maybe the jaw bone of a calf or fawn. It shone in the sun, so pretty.

S., who is in in early 60s, has lived here most all of his life and tells me he has never been outside of the county. He's been a good friend to me, though our lives couldn't be more different. He's worked in a charcoal factory on nearby Charcoal Road and for many years after that, as a farmhand. His health suffers as a result of his labors. He collects old stuff--farm equipment, old cast iron cookware, stuff like that. Here's my favorite part of his collection.

This is a sight that always makes me happy and I have been looking forward to sharing it with citynoise.

S. is an amazing gardener. I admired his poppies, as I do every year, and he gave me one. It accompanied back down the road on the way home after my visit.

By this time, the sun was much lower in the sky than when I first set out to see S.

"Papaver" or "papavier" is the Latin name for the poppy family...you can see why, the papery-ness of it all is quite something.

I was excited to find this round rock on my way home. It was a nice companion in my hand to the feather-light poppy from S. A gift from the road.

lovely. you make me smile on this london morning. it's 7.15 am and has been muggy all night, and outside already bombastic harsh sunlight lies in wait to boil the day, thanyou for sharing your poppy and cool morning

elaine: evening, sorry

GGP: 23rd Jun 2005 - 13:30 GMT

Joey: yes, a wool jacket. it's always kind of chilly here...except when it's hot. The mountains. And constantly changing weather. and yes, oh, My Side of the Mountain...I loved that book when I was kid. I need to find a copy and re-read it! Thanks for reminding me.

elaine: hope the day didn't overboil and that you stayed cool. :)

wow. I like the quality of a lot of the posts here, like a story, an intro that builds to some special experience...with this, journey down the lane, the quirky pleasures of the license plates...the poppy shots are amazing, I assume you weren't high when you took them, but they capture something ecstatic, transcendent...a real joy to get to see the world through your eyes...

GGP: 24th Jun 2005 - 16:39 GMT

er...high on nature...rocky mountain high...john denver...that kind of high...not high on opium poppy.
