London Fields Lido Blues

the abandond lido (outdoor swimming pool) provided a cool blue pair of canvasses for this 'man alone'.
i first knew there was a lido here one day when ian's dog charlie ran off into it during a walk. my heart ached to have it be reopened. lo! but did i not get my wish? the gods of olympic bids or whatever moved them, hackney council are planning to rebuild it. ra!
i was at someone's house soon after saying 'i wish they would reopn the lido' and he handed me a flyer advertising it's revamping. it's like i made it happen, in that childish 'i make things happen' way.
other lidos are beyond repair and languish in ballardian decayed splendour, or are wiped from view if not collective memory of halcyon prelapsarian days. there is one in south london which i went to as an adult. it will be sublime to have one here

i used to go as a child 35 years ago {god help me where does the time go], the one in victoria park was oval or circular in shape cant remember when they knocked it down.as me and my comtemperies grew older we graduated to the oasis in holborn indoor and outdoor pools.

elaine: 25th Jun 2005 - 08:16 GMT

i love the outdoor pool in the oasis, it is heated and lit inside and you can swim in the dark and the rain. i used to work in the theatre across the road and go there in my break. bliss. i can't wait for this one to reopen

Fran: 3rd August 2005 15:32: 3rd Aug 2005 - 14:27 GMT

If it re-opens i'll eat my hat. It's due to re-open next year and, after an initial flurry of builders lorries being present at the scene earlier in the year, work now seems to have ground to a halt. I really hope it does re-open as it's just across the road from me.

elaine: 3rd Aug 2005 - 14:42 GMT

i've never seen someone eat their hat. what kind will it be?

rick: 19th Sep 2005 - 08:52 GMT

....still no sign of any bulding works being done and its mid september......tick tick tick

elaine: 19th Sep 2005 - 14:31 GMT

yeah, bloody bastards. did they put those flyers out before the election, do you remember?

rick: 13th Dec 2005 - 11:40 GMT

ok....this place is over due an update.....
As any of you other locals will realise by now the building work has started and according to the main man on-site who i talked to it is a 33week build and should be open in july 05 some time.
They are going to completely re-do the pool and the surrounding paving etc. Im not sure about the old enterance but i have heard that they are trying to keep as much of the original feel and look of the building as possible. The are plans for a cafe which would be open for those inside and outside the pool.
The pool is going to be the only heated out door 50m pool in THE WHOLE OF LONDON!!....in the autumn the plan is to have a huge plastic bubble roof thing ( apparently the spurs have the same roof over their chingford training ground) which would stay over the pool untill the late spring thus turning it into an indoor pool for those cold months.
The real beauty of the project is that there is NO PARKING SPACES which will deter any OUT SIDERS leaving the pool as a perfect little oasis for LONDON FIELDS dwellers......mmmmmmm.......cant wait!

rick: 13th Dec 2005 - 12:05 GMT

ooops.......i MEANT it should be open in JULY 06 not 05......anyway....its all good.

fieldzy: 5th Jul 2006 - 09:12 GMT

Is there any news on the actual date? I cannot wait...

Pixie: 9th Oct 2006 - 13:25 GMT

Looking better, lots of work done but no official opening date yet it seems....

Alf: 26th Oct 2006 - 11:41 GMT

swimmer: 20th Aug 2007 - 17:17 GMT
