For reasons, they're installing clear trash cans in front of . Apparently, what you can see can't hurt you, eh? Though I'm not sure that spotting a "suspicious" package (or ?) in the can is going to do much good, regardless of what sort of can youre using.

The pulls in to pick up/discharge passengers. I took this photo as an addendum to this post. I thought the story wasn't complete without at least a photo of one of their .

Apparently, there was some sort of minor at the this , as when I arrived, I was greeted by two s with flashing.

kobe: clear rubbish bins! ha ha ha!

elaine: i bet they are going to age really badly

Peter: 24th May 2005 - 17:40 GMT

totally. i thought the same thing when i saw em. theyll probably turn yellow soon, after sitting in the sun. or cracking and breaking would be a more likely fate, what with the harsh winters and such here. ill keep you posted...

elaine: 24th May 2005 - 17:43 GMT

yes. i predict yellow, cracked, scratched tagged and with strange disgusting ketchuppy type smears and things stuck to the inside rotting away nicely

Peter: 24th May 2005 - 17:49 GMT

i know, right? whos genius idea was it to make clear cans? now the garbage will cake up all over the innards and show through, heh. nobody wants to see that, im sure... this points out perfectly the dilemma of american "homeland security"... theyll spend a load of cash and man-hours on undertakings like installing clear garbage cans... stuff that doesnt really do anything at all except serve as busy-work so they can rationalize spending the millions of federally allocated "security" funds for something... this sort of pointless waste happens all over now as america becomes obsessed-to-a-fault with quick fixes to our overhyped and overblown security "needs".

i am interested in how our different countries metabolise notions of 'risk'. frinstance i couldn't get a fish with bones in in a restaurant in california, but driving up the 1 after rain in an open topped car we had to pull over for rock slides on the road. in the UK those hills would have big metal hair nets on them for that, and a posh restaurant would not take the head off a fish far less bone it. when the IRA were bombing london a lot we just had all our public bins taken away, which was a bloody nuisance. the govt here are trying to bring in ID cards. a new infringement to the 'freedom' we expect - you don't even have to carry your driving licence when you drive here - but in US you do and you already have ID tied in to that

jeeff: 25th May 2005 - 04:08 GMT

that's a good point. in japan, people are allowed to play with firecrackers every day. in canada, they're only legal... two days a year, i think. and yet i hear of so many bad incidents involving firecrackers here, while i never heard of one in japan.

elaine: 25th May 2005 - 05:45 GMT

that's very interesting. we used to have things in kids playgrounds which have been ripped out now because of 'risk' but i don't remember anywone getting injured on them, and certainly nothing in the news - it was just part of the clampdown on individual liberty that encouraged people to live in such fear that they keep their kids indoors, isolated and getting fat instead of letting them play out. the paedophile fear is massive here. i think it is govt policy - they love it when we are frightened

Peter: 25th May 2005 - 14:20 GMT

fear is one of the most powerful humanity-controlling tools that people have access to...

jeeff: 25th May 2005 - 15:06 GMT

same thing with the playgrounds in toronto. in the last few years, they tore down about half of the playgrounds in the city, leaving just a concrete pad at 157 schools and many city park playgrounds. here's a good quote from the dufferin park website (www.dufferinpark.ca):

"These inspections followed former Mayor Mel Lastman's 1998 motion that all park playgrounds should be "upgraded" to meet new 1998 standards (backed, not by the government, but by an association of mainly manufacturers, almost half of them not located Canada)."

since then, only a handful have been replaced, and only 4 have received any kind of funding. most have been payed for by angry parents. very angry parents. www.torontoplaygrounds.com

DANGER!

GGP: 25th May 2005 - 15:49 GMT

that see-thru garbage can could use some anti-climb paint, no?

Peter: totally! and so could the above playground ;)

Ivan: What about burning cigarettes?

Peter: 25th May 2005 - 17:05 GMT

i dont know... but i hope no one would toss a burning cigarette into a garbage can!

jeeff: 25th May 2005 - 23:49 GMT

in tokyo, smoking is illegal on the sidewalk in many places, but legal in almost all buildings (airports, etc). why? because holding a lit cigarette on the sidewalk, you could accidentally poke somebody in the eye. JT (japan tobacco) runs tv ads explaining this.

elaine: 28th May 2005 - 19:32 GMT

i expect you could if you tried! i would have thought that was one of the smaller you could run into in life... governments are marvellous sometimes, really looking after our interests there
