Color Abberations PDX

I recently did some shooting in north portland, near St. John's. These images were timed exposures in minimal light, experimenting with color abberations on ccd's in limited lighting situations. The most common thread with the color was the appearance of red and green where those colors were not visible to the eye. These shots were exposed for 15-30 seconds around 2am on a clear night.

The industrial areas in Portland are a pretty fascinating subject to photograph as so many people who do not work there frequent them. Mainly bombers and the occasional artists as well as explorers and transients have left marks in these places. Though the risks of getting caught in these areas are significantly lower than say, uptown, it is still an interesting convergence location. Thanks for looking.

cor, lovely. low light photos always have a certain mojo if you can pull it off, specially for the quietude and loneliness of the scene. the colours can be a bit weird, and if you start fiddling with them you can get some interesting effects, but also a bit lost. i suppose it depends if you 'need' to be 'realist' or whatever, but even the raw image is never raw anyway really, even with digital cameras there are already variables built in, and i don't suppose for a minute this is how things looked to the naked eye, but is it really that important?

i like this a lot. the photos are beautiful and crisp, but the slant on them really makes them look different than your average night-time tripod shots. also, great detailed text info accompanying your photos. i've been playing around in low light with my camera too, trying to create artificial daylight. i'll have a post soon about it.

viva night photos... i love that last one, too, where the camera seems to make delicate halos and artifacts around the lights. sweet. thanks for posting!

Thanks a ton for the comments. I was on the rocks about continuing the night photography, but thanks for the added encouragement. Cheers

I'm 99% sure that they are natural gas cannisters. That was a weird spot in between the NW Natural Gas plant and the ARCO gasoline storage place, so, it's some kind of fuel. Whatever it is, its heavily secured.

The way the light's been captured coming off the lamps is uber cool...

Yeah, night shots are always fun. The effects are due to what's called "reciprocity failure." In short, the films chemicals are made to really only be exposed for a short amount of time...when you set up shots that are longer (say, when you're taking photos at night!) the chemicals begin to react differently than they normally would -- creating all those awesome colors and highlights that you don't see in person with the naked eye! Yeah, I'm an art nerd...keep up the awesome work!
