Yesterday's assignment: photograph stuff on the street that includes text of some sort. The garbage-strewn strip along Atlantic Avenue above the railyards provided the perfect site for this project. None of the elements were moved or rearranged in any way. Where a happy assemblage occurs, we have only the litterers and the wind to thank.

if you see something say something. neat turnaround, that semiotician

GGP: 14th May 2005 - 16:38 GMT

if you see something say something is the post-9/11 mantra on the NYC subway system. you know--suspicious packages, people taking photos of trash, atypical behavior...

elaine: 14th May 2005 - 16:47 GMT

i could see the mundane anchoring of what existentially is rather a nice little poetic, but i think you pulled it out of the mundane, candy neck

elaine: 14th May 2005 - 17:11 GMT

we have, since the days of the visiting team of the IRA in london, had no litter bins and lots of notices - ours centre around a notion of 'suspicious packages'. why the packages are suspicious of us, i do not know, but it is best to report them, becuase they get very angry, aparrently, if you don't

GGP: you can never be too careful these days.

walls have ears; keep mum, she's not so dumb; careless talk costs lives... and remember to wash behind your ears

elaine: you have to look at the goo for this one!

elaine: 14th May 2005 - 18:14 GMT

and i offer you this

jyk: 14th May 2005 - 18:23 GMT

gg, a new poetic form is born on the street(s) of brooklyn, ny - looks like the great american forensic poem. fragments of language and image. culture on the morning of the day after tomorrow. i see- i don't need words- for the entire message is encoded in our media soaked brains. 12 stanzas written in image. i like this forensic form.

i once knew an artist that would photograph lost combs. he would include a compass in the photo to record the direction of the comb's teeth. stay away from formalism.

elaine: 14th May 2005 - 18:30 GMT

like the phrase - forensic poem - very evocative.
re compass, can see a nerdy appeal, it's better than putting a milk bottle in to show scale, at least, which we were pragmatically advised at college. no way! (less it was about milk bottles, of cours)

GGP: 14th May 2005 - 21:34 GMT

jyk: yep, formalizm sux; I've had enough formality for one lifetime. the comb/compass thing is brilliant and insane...and brilliant.
elaine: honored by your offering.

A Song Bird in the Park

there she was, playing her guitar and singing, she was like a nightingale, alone, we made eye contact and i winked and she smiled. she was a vision of the 60's, a wanderer, a street minstrel, a time, long ago,...
