Bigger and blander, the 80s paradoxically look to the 20s as a high-water mark
A winged demigod built to face a row of theaters sits across from a pre-fab tower built for a block that's dead by 6pm.

the express here in nyc looks very similar. post-postmodern glassy curtain walls. consumerist architecture at its blandest.

vz: 6th May 2005 - 01:28 GMT

the express in the photo is in the mall level of an office tower built in the 80s, liberty place. though the architects' deferential nod to the building across the street -- copying of its color scheme and imitating its extravagant art deco flourishes in the most watered down, post- boardroom cost cutting way possible -- is somewhat ironic, it's interesting that it took place at all.

In the reflections of the bland Express store windows you can see the Art Institute of Philadelphia building which is a stunning building. The art deco/machine age design seems so out of place when you see it surrounded by all the dull storefronts and the immense monoliths of glass known as the Liberty Place Towers. And there's that irony - all those other buildings with their similar deigns, they all reflect the same thing in their glass.

so often just each other - in an infinity of glass nothingness, like a big swimmingpool world. once when the IRA bombed the city here in london all the glass was put out, and those vertical strip blinds flapped in the wind. it looked like there had been a fantastic party. nice work for the glaziers

Los Angeles Courtyards There is something inviting about a courtyard. Whether it is enclosed by a building or partly open to a larger space, whether it is a quiet refuge or bustling and noisy, a courtyard can create a pleasing sense...
