Dungeness 1998
[previous] :: [next]
The reason i know about dungeness was because the film maker derek jarman loved it there. his cottage is the middle shot. he died in 1994. i took these photos in 1998. he had made a 'garden' of sorts, which was kind of illegal. this area is a site of special scientific interest because of all the different weird seaweed and other stuff and he was messing with it a bit, and anyway it's the seaside, and he died, and the way of these things is that i don't think it's been maintained, or that it could be, and i'm not sure he even would have wanted it to be. he had a big passion for the apocalyptic post war vision thing, and i think he has influenced me a lot. he made a feature film called jubilee and lots of pop videos for the smiths on super 8, lovely saturated colour. when he got hiv it was before it was possible to live with it, so he died. this was a massive personal shame, clearly, for people who knew and loved him, but on a selfish note, i miss him as an artist and as a cultural character. he used to come here for fish and chips, and one day he bought a hut, way, way before it was expensive or trendy. some of the places here are made of old railway carriages. the whole thing is overlooked by the nuclear power plant. the last shot shows what most of it looks like. when you drive down here it's quite hard to navigate, becuase the notion of 'road' gets a bit vague. he said it was the end of the world and it is, and lovely for it. there is a big army practice place full of squaddies running around in heavy clothes right next to the power plant, right next to RSPB wetlands (royal society for the protection of birds) two lighthouses, a miniature railway and a thousand year old holly forest. and fish and chips This article has been viewed 2907 times in the last 3 years Peter: 29th Apr 2005 - 19:37 GMTcool. a glimpse at a place i know nothing about... i love seeing the random stuff coming through here lately. and fish and chips! kimberly: 29th Apr 2005 - 19:54 GMTmy gran told me all that land used to be owned by british railways. what would they want with a spread like romney marsh? the place is a floating sinkhole only kept afloat by old earth works and partitions that date back almost to the romans, expecially that stretch of the rhee wall between romney and appledore. a good vacation spot i bet real pretty but i dont like the sea very much elaine: 29th Apr 2005 - 20:21 GMTbeats me, it's not like it's on the way anywhere, and you can't build on it. maybe they thought they could start the channel tunnel there? they keep busy moving the pebbles around, you're right, it's completely claimed land, it shouldn't even be there elaine: 2nd May 2005 - 07:50 GMTyeah, i don't know if the etymology is the same or different, the scots have a particular history with france so maybe ness is nose, but dungeness is very near france and it means danger nose in french - danger nez. i love that. i am a total dungeness nut anyway, everything about it is so bonkers, and having such an izzardian name is just perfect elaine: 17th May 2005 - 15:52 GMTthe lighthouse was recently for sale for £150 000. although it is, in housing terms, more just a staircase and a couple of landings than anything really livable, i entertained a fantasy of living there for several hours, and even looked it up on the net, by which time the advert had been pulled, so someone else is either as mental as me, or else they have planning permission for ruining it. Peter Howarth: 22nd Jul 2005 - 11:13 GMTI lived in nearby GREATSTONE-ON-SEA in 2000.I wwnt every week to the hut that sold all manner of smoked fish.I also visited the local hostelry(Brittania)for an excellent pint and occasionally superb fish and chips elaine: 22nd Jul 2005 - 12:30 GMTi know DJ went the pilot for preference, but i have always been drawn back to the brit. they do such good fish and chips, and a good pint of guinness, my ale of choice, and the puddings are fantastic, though i rarely got as far as pudding without bursting at the seams. you were lucky to live there. i didn't know there was a smokery, i will look out for it next time Duncan: 28th Nov 2005 - 23:45 GMTI have been down to Dungeness many times, and can assure you all that DJ's patronage of The Pilot was inspired, despite a change of ownership in the past 10 years or so it is better than ever (although we can't smoke in there any more). We have tried the brittania a few times but it is always either dead or populated by rude ignorant people who don't seem to have even a cursory command of English (except the anglo saxon bits). The landlord was ignorant and rude to my girfriend and the food was frozen, even after it was supposed to be cooked! Marion: 28th Jan 2006 - 16:01 GMTMy grandparents whose name was Tarte lived in one of the houses on the beach all of their lives. My grandad was a fisherman and his uncle was the coxwain of the lifeboat. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
