Under the Freeway

under the freeway, alongside the tracks: san francisco

it was freezing under there, in the shadow of the I-280 North overpass. despite the sun & blue skies, the wind blew hard & cold along the train tracks. i heard a noise & turned. three young guys in hoodies were coming in to the underneath from seventh street--& one of them was heading straight for me. he said something, but a semi passing overhead drowned him out. he said it again. "do you write?" a look of complete incomprehension must have crossed my face. "do you paint," he clarified, with a hint of exasperation. "uh, no. i'm just taking pictures...."

the youth gestured up the tracks, to a spot away from the view of surface roads, where the tracks met a hill and continued on through a tunnel. "there's a lot of cool shit up there. go check it out. you'll like it." "thanks," i replied. i trudged along the tracks towards this supposed treasure trove of grafitti art, knowing that he was really just trying to ensure that i wouldn't follow his crew to their painting site.

but i wasn't upset for long, because he didn't lie. there were wonderous works & spellbinding sights ahead, under the overpass, hidden away where only the CalTrain commuters & homeless wanderers would see them. (more pics soon)

citynoise indeed. what could be more of a fetish for urban/art lovers than graffiti?!

egenus: 28th May 2002 - 18:40 GMT

That is some phat graffiti. People around here are no where near as creative. We just get the ironic "Jesus Loves You" vandalism.

In Peterborough you might be lucky enough to find some 12year old kid has scribbled his initials followed by an expletive of choice – Nothing as exquisite as this!

Peter: 13th Jan 2003 - 20:04 GMT

how about showing us some of what peterboro has to offer?

also: since my name is peter, post a photo of some sign that says "peterboro" on it, so i can hack the photo for personal use :)

Gaz: 13th Jan 2003 - 21:36 GMT

Okey dokes, when I get the time to get down to the CC, after forthcoming ex*ms. A maths exam on my 18th - how crap is that? Then another the day after!

Jamie: 14th Jan 2003 - 19:09 GMT

you know, i've been meaning to mention that i've tracked down some info on the graf writer behind pic #3 (and pic #4 here). his name is Thesis, and according to what i've dug up on the Net, he calls London, Ontario home. his artwork has turned up on albums and t-shirts for Alias, an underground rapper from the Anticon posse.

moebius rex: 14th Jan 2003 - 21:03 GMT

more on thesis' career as a rap artist.

Peter: wow, moe, thanks for the info!

Juli Sabastian: Amazing pictures
