Bushwick: The Fire Woman

- upfromflames - Monday, April 2nd, 2007 : goo

This image, by artist and teacher Joe Matunis, was part of a mural put up back in 1994 with the help of Bushwick High students. It was located in the park at Putnam and Irving. The rebirth hinted at in this mural is as much about this Bushwick as this park, once an infamous haunt for drug dealing.

But this is not about the drugs. Its about the flames.

The mural is gone now. But for those moved by this work, you'll be happy to know that Joe will be back on the scene this summer, as the Academy for Urban Planning (partners in Up From Flames) are planning a new mural for this same space.

Nice to see Bushwick coming back again
Back in the day ('69 or so) I used to teach at PS 106 on Putnam Ave.

I attended PS 106 from about 1963 to 1966 (?). I remember mrs. Fuchs (had a crush on her). the school now looks decrepid and white-washed.

To the teacher that taught in 1969 at P.S. 106, I attended P.O. 106 in 1969 and I am looking for a husband and wife who use to teach at the school. I like to get in touch with them. They were the greatest teachers I've ever had. If you know their names please let me know.

Ed Vas: 29th May 2007 - 00:16 GMT

I think my fifth grade teacher's name of Mr. Leonard I can't think of his last name. Maybe I'm wrong with the first name. This husband and wife team would give the students stars and the student with the most stars at the end of the month would get to go out with them.

upfromflames: 29th May 2007 - 01:18 GMT

sounds like a great memory. Where did they take you? Around Bushwick? to the city?

Ed Vas: 5th Jun 2007 - 00:44 GMT

They us to Shea Stadium to see the Mets, Statue of Liberty and out to eat.
